Air Canada flight diverts to Calgary due to ‘extremely unruly passenger,’ woman taken to hospital

An Air Canada Rouge flight from Toronto had to divert to Calgary due to an “extremely unruly passenger” Thursday night Calgary police said.

Police said the Victoria-bound jet landed in Calgary at around 11 p.m. after passengers had to restrain a woman in flight.

Police said they came aboard and took the woman into custody.

“She was taken to the hospital for observation,” police said. “An investigation is underway to determine if charges should be laid.”

An email from Air Canada media relations confirmed the flight was met by authorities in Calgary and that the flight resumed to Victoria after a three-hour delay.

Unruly passenger forces WestJet flight from Calgary to U.K. to return

A WestJet flight headed from Calgary to London, England was forced to turn back soon after takeoff Friday evening after a passenger became unruly.

Police were called to meet the flight when it arrived back at the gate and a man was taken into custody.

WestJet Flight 1 left Calgary about 6:10 p.m., said Sgt. Duane Lepchuk, and was turned around about an hour later.

« At approximately 8:30 p.m., the plane landed and we took one male subject in custody and charges are currently pending, » he said.

« We’re trying to determine exactly what transpired on the plane so there could be a range of charges. »

A spokesperson with WestJet declined to comment, citing police involvement.

More than a dozen Kelowna RCMP and city bylaw officers descended on Leon Avenue just after 10 p.m. on Thursday night when officers requested assistance to deal with an uncooperative man.

Numerous police officers were seen assisting in the curbside arrest that concluded with the hogtied male being lifted into the back seat of an police car.

The man being held down by police can be heard talking while police restrained his legs and arms.

Police at the scene would not comment on the incident but only said the man tried to fight a police officer.

Emergency crews, minutes earlier, had been called to the Level nightclub at 275 Leon Ave. for a report of a non-responsive male.

RCMP would not say if the arrest was related to the medical call.

The man arrested sustained extensive facial injures, but it is not known when that occurred.

Police were seen speaking with a bouncer at the nightclub as well as others who were called out from the establishment.
